RIDOLINE 560

Acidic Cleaner for D & I Aluminum Cans

1. Introduction:

RIDOLINE 560 is chromium free and consists of two concentrated, liquid chemicals used to prepare an acidic

cleaner bath expressly suited to the cleaning of D & I aluminum cans in conventional power spray processing

equipment. The cleaner effectively removes drawing lubricants and compounds and maintain the original bright

aluminum can surface.

The RIDOLINE 560 cleaning solution retains the dissolved aluminum in solution and no hard scaly deposits are

formed on the tank or heating coils. The process is sludgeless.

RIDOLINE 560 cleaning solution is adaptable to automatic bath control using LINEGUARD electronic control

equipment which is recommended for use with this process.

2. Operating Summary:

Free Acid 8.0 to 20.0 ml vv

Reaction Product 2.5 x Free Acid (maximum)

pH 1.00 to 1.40

Temperature 120° to 150° Fahrenheit

Spray Time approx. 25 to 60 seconds

3. The Process:

The complete process sequence normally consists of the following steps:

A. Prewash

B. Cleaning with RIDOLINE 560 cleaning solution

C. Water rinsing

D. ALODINE treatment or other surface treatment

E. Water rinsing

F. Deionized water rinsing or Mobility Enhancer

G. Drying

4. Materials:

RIDOLINE 560

RIDOLINE 120WN

Testing Reagents and Apparatus.

RIDOLINE 560 and RIDOLINE 120WN are both liquid chemicals which, when added together with water, constitute the RIDOLINE 560 cleaning process.

5. Equipment:

The process tank, housing, pumps and piping for use with the cleaning solution should be constructed of 316L stainless steel. Spray nozzles should be fabricated from 316 stainless steel. The heat exchanger plates should be of polished 316 stainless steel. All process circulating pump seals, valve seats, door seals, and other elastomers which come in contact with the working process solution should be EPDM, Teflon? or Viton?.

All chemical pump seals, valve seats and other elastomers which come in contact with the concentrated solution should be EPDM, Teflon or Viton.

Support equipment available from Henkel Surface Technologies for this process include: chemical feed pumps, level controls, transfer pumps and bulk storage tanks.

Our sales representative should be consulted for information on Henkel Surface Technologies LINEGUARD automatic process control equipment for this process and any additional questions. In addition, the "Henkel Surface Technologies Equipment Design Manual" may be consulted.

6. Surface Preparation:

Prewashing:

A heated (100° to 140° Fahrenheit) water prewash should be used to remove as much of the drawing lubricant and wall ironer coolant as possible from the cans before the application of RIDOLINE 560 cleaning solution. Acidifying the prewash solution by backflowing the RIDOLINE 560 cleaning solution or by additions of acid may be beneficial for controlling the emulsified oil burden of this stage.

7. Cleaning with RIDOLINE 560 Cleaning Solution:

Buildup:

The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each product should be consulted for first aid and handling information before attempting to use the product.

Fill the tank to the operating level with fresh cool water and for every 100 gallons of operating tank volume, add one gallon (10.6 pounds) of RIDOLINE 560 and 1.2 fluid ounces of RIDOLINE 120WN. To avoid excessive foaming, make sure that the cleaning bath temperature is above 120° Fahrenheit before attempting to spray the solution.

Operation:

Time: 25 to 60 seconds.

Temperature: 120° to 150° Fahrenheit.

8. Testing and Control:

Never pipet by mouth, use a pipet filler.

The RIDOLINE 560 bath is controlled by a LINEGUARD controller. Secondary control methods are described which are to be used for performing routine LINEGUARD equipment checks and for troubleshooting procedures.

The following tests should be performed at least once every 8 hours.

Free Acid and pH:

Free acid and pH measurements are both accurate methods when testing a fresh bath. As the bath is used and reaction products accumulate in the bath, free acid is a more accurate control method for maintaining a constant cleaning rate.

Pipet a 10 ml sample of the RIDOLINE 560 cleaning solution into a 250-ml beaker. Add 100 ml of distilled water and 5 to 10 drops of Indicator 3. Add 1/2 Teaspoonful of Reagent 6 or 10 mls of Reagent Solution 37 with stirring and allow the sample to stand one minute. Titrate with Titrating Solution 11 while stirring the sample until a definite pink color develops. The ml of Titrating Solution 11 used is the free acid value in points.

Free acid range: 8 to 10 points (ml) for solutions prepared at 1% by volume.

To increase value 1 point: approximately 1 pint of RIDOLINE 560 per 100 gallons of bath volume.

The relationship between the free acid, the pH and the cleaning solution concentration is shown below.

Concentration Free Acid pH

(% by volume) (in points) (at 77° F)

0.5 ..................... 4.5 .................. 1.52

1.0 ..................... 9.0 .................. 1.29

1.5 ..................... 13.5 .................. 1.15

2.0 ..................... 18.0 .................. 1.06

2.5 ..................... 22.5 .................. 0.97

Total Acid:

Pipette a 10 ml sample of cleaner bath into a 250-ml beaker. Add 100 ml of distilled water and 5 to 10 drops of Indicator Solution 3. Titrate with Titrating Solution 11 while stirring the sample until a definite pink color develops. The ml of Titrating Solution 11 used is the total acid value in points.

Record the points of total acid for use in calculating the Reaction Product.

Reaction Product (RP):

The Reaction Product is a measure of the quantity of dissolved aluminum present in the bath. The Reaction Product is calculated using the equation:

Reaction Product = Total Acid points minus Free Acid points.

A maximum Reaction Product value of 2.5 times the free acid value of the bath is recommended in order to maintain effective operation of the cleaner. However, a specific line may require maintaining a lower Reaction Product value for most effective operation. Our representative will assist in determining the best value. The maximum Reaction Product value is maintained by overflowing the cleaner bath. The amount of overflow required can be calculated as follows:

Record the number of days required for the RP to reach the maximum value. Divide the number of gallons in the bath by the number of days. This value is the number of gallons of bath which should be drawn off daily to keep the Reaction Product below the maximum value.

Activity Control:

The method of measuring the RIDOLINE 120WN concentration (Activity) makes use of a standardized Orion Fluoride Ion Electrode and an Orion Meter:

Immerse the Orion Fluoride Ion Electrode and the reference electrode into the Standard Solution 120MC. Using the expanded millivolt scale, bring the pointer to zero (center scale) with the Standard Knob.

Remove the electrodes from the standard solution, rinse with distilled water and dry.

Cool a sample of the bath to the same temperature as the Standard Solution 120MC used for electrode standardization. Immerse the electrodes into the bath sample and record the meter reading.

For a freshly prepared bath, the meter should read between 0 to +10 millivolts. A (+) millivolt reading indicates a lesser amount of RIDOLINE 120WN in a bath; a (-) millivolt reading indicates a greater amount of RIDOLINE 120WN in the bath.

NOTE: The activity reading is dependent to a large extend on the pH of the RIDOLINE 560 cleaning solution. The activity reading is also affected by the temperature of the bath.

The relationship that exists between pH and the activity reading for an operating bath temperature of 125° Fahrenheit is shown below.

Bath ph Free Acid Titration Activity Reading

1.10 ................ 16.0 ml ....................... +19

1.20 ................ -- ....................... +11

1.30 ................ 9.0 ml ....................... + 5

1.36 ................ -- ....................... 0

1.40 ................ -- ....................... - 2

1.50 ................ 4.5 ml ....................... - 9

It is very important to correlate the Activity Reading and the bath Free Acid or pH. If it has been found necessary to operate the RIDOLINE 560 cleaning solution at a Free Acid level different from the recommended operating range in order to produce clean surfaces, the control point of the LINEGUARD controller must be reset to 50. Failure to reset the control point can give rise to high operating costs and varying cleaning efficiency.

pH Determination and Control:

pH is a measure of the acidity of the RIDOLINE 560 cleaning solution. This measurement will served as a cross-check of the LINEGUARD controller's pH section.

pH measurements are obtained using an electrometric pH meter previously standardized with a fresh buffer solution whose pH is as close as possible to the bath pH. The preferable method would be to use 2 point standardization.

NOTE: The buffer solution must be discarded if it has been used for more than one week. If the buffer solution is suspected of being contaminated, it should be discarded immediately.

The pH should be maintained between 1.20 and 1.40 for normal cleaning conditions in a fresh bath (RP less than 10 ml). As the RP increases, the dissolved aluminum effects the pH measurement such that the pH becomes numerically higher (bath apparently weaker) at the same acidity level (as measured by Free Acid). To maintain a constant etch rate, the free acid and activity must be kept constant. Thus, if pH control is used, the controller must be reset to reflect the above effect. When the bath reaches a stable RP, no further adjustment will be necessary.

9. After Cleaning:

After application of the RIDOLINE 560 cleaning process the cans should be thoroughly rinsed with tap water. The cans may then be processed with an ALODINE conversion coating bath or other types of metal surface treatments may be applied, if desired, according to the recommendations supplied with those products.

10. Storage Requirements:

RIDOLINE 560 will freeze at -10° Fahrenheit. RIDOLINE 120WN will freeze at -2° Fahrenheit. Freezing is not detrimental to these products. Simply thaw the products and after thorough mixing they will be ready for use. It is recommended that RIDOLINE 560 and RIDOLINE 120WN be stored where the temperature will not go below 0° Fahrenheit.

11. General Maintenance:

Since the RIDOLINE 560 cleaner process is sludge free and therefore should require no special maintenance. If the Stage 1 prewash becomes heavily laden with oil and D & I coolants, it should be overflowed to minimize contamination of the downstream washer stages.

12. Waste Disposal Information:

Applicable regulations covering disposal and discharge of chemicals should be consulted and followed.

Disposal information for RIDOLINE 560 and RIDOLINE 120WN is given on the Material Safety Data Sheet for each product.

The cleaning solution is acidic, contains fluoride and can contain oil. Waste treatment and neutralization may be required prior to discharge to the sewer. The RIDOLINE 560 bath may contain ingredients other than those present in the chemical as supplied and analysis of the solution may be required prior to disposal.

13. Precautionary Information:

When handling the chemical products used in this process, the first aid and handling recommendations on the Material Safety Data Sheets for each product should be read, understood and followed.

The RIDOLINE 560 cleaning solution is acidic and can cause irritation of the skin and eyes and may burn eyes.

The RIDOLINE 560 bath and RIDOLINE 120WN contain Hydrofluoric Acid. Do not get them in eyes, on skin or on clothing. In case of contact, follow the recommendations on the Material Safety Data Sheet for the respective chemical concentrates.
